Turkey - What You Could Look Forward Out Of A Holiday In Turkey
I strongly suggest holidays in Turkey. It is a beautiful country packed with diversity. No matter what your passions. If it is culture that you like, then Turkey history is dripping with antiquity which includes the renowned Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In case it is sunshine you are longing, then the weather in Turkey is brilliant with coasts stretched across the Aegean and Mediterranean and if it is nightlife and an active lifestyle, then Istanbul or Bodrum will provide a wealth of nightclubs and eating places to name just a few places. The holidays in Turkey have never annoyed us.
Bodrum is a convenient place to stay. You have a lot of restaurants to choose from ranging from small bistros where you can get pizza, to expensive restaurants where you can try true Turkish food which is awesome. In Bodrum itself there are several restaurants that look over the busy harbour where one can sit and watch the world go by. The evening outlook is spectacular with the sun setting and the fort lit up on the hill.
We stayed just near Bodrum in Ortakent which is much less noisy although you still have the luxury of well stocked stores KIPA (owned by Tesco) and Burger King if the need takes you!. The smaller cities outside of Bodrum offer a quieter feel where you can sit by the water enjoying freshly caught fish whilst seeing the fishermen and the little boats sail across the harbours. Other villages including Bitez are based by the sea and so many of the restaurants are in fact on the beach.
We decided to drive up to Ephesus when we are staying in Bodrum. Ephesus contains the largest collection of Roman remains in the eastern Mediterranean with just about 15% of it having been excavated. The ruins that are identifiable give some notion of the city's original glory, the thought that people had walked the streets in 60AD is amazing and to walk along streets from the past and appreciate the architecture is a tour that I would strongly recommend.
Patara is a completely different experience set further south on the Mediterranean. You can see one of the best beaches imaginable. Patara beach is 75km south of Fethiye and is around 20km long. When we went it was not busy, had white sand and because it is 20km in length meant you can walk along the seashore until you found a point that you were satisfied with. The sea was warm and clear and we spent a few days there which is unusual for me, as I am not really a beach lover. Also Patara beach perhaps has the claim of the birthplace of Santa Claus. Work that out if you can. Just back from the shore is an Amphitheatre. We went to see this on a Sunday morning and had the complete site to ourselves. Impressive to be able to look around an Amphitheatre and not have to share it with anybody. You can in fact start to imagine what it must have been like back in the Roman days.
Along the coast from Patara is Kalkan which we used to go regularly for an evening food. Kalkan is set up more for the visitor so you will see many shops, flats some very good roof top dining places where you can eat and look out to sea and an active nightlife.
I love Turkey. I would suggest holidays in Turkey to anyone as it has so much to offer
